It's been a while

It's been a while since I last jotted my entry. There are things that had happened and things that had not happened the way I would like it and things that had happened not the way I wanted but that's what the human folks call life. I volunteered myself for the Rainforest World Music Festival 2005. Absolutely no idea I got selected. Oh yes... the organizers get to pick who they want as volunteers. So, I consider myself lucky. I'm dying to get close to the action (if there is any) at organizing one of the biggest events on this side of the planet, Sarawak.

I had the pleasure of attending the RWMF 2004. It was awesome.! Partly because it was my first time so I have no expectation of any kind and in the books of the RWMF veteran, I'm still a "virgin". As I look forward to the RWMF 2005 (8-10 July), I hope that my ramblings in my blog can capture some of the essence of the RWMF and its magic...

The elder sister

If you're a female, single, living the city, the eldest in the family, have got a 19 turning 20 young brother that is still studying and happens to be the youngest in the family, supporting your youngest brother through university, then you would know where I would be coming from.

Ever have a sibling that you just don't seem to understand much and seem to have all the brains and all the good results but are so disorganized? I have and sometimes he just drives me up the wall. No matter how much you try to not be like the "nagging mother" they already have in their closet, no matter how much you think they should be treated like an adult, well, don't. If they cannot decide simple things such as which flight to book and what course to take or which university to apply, you need not bother treat them like an adult. Just tell them what you want them to do!

Still, there is an old malay saying "takkan putus air dicincang". Blood is certainly thicker than water and no matter how much we would love to hate them, we hate not to look out for them. After all, family is still family and no amount of ignoring could take away the hideous little remark they made nor take away the pain of seeing them make more mistakes (usually the same old one) over and over again.

Maybe its our way to learning as well. Maybe there is never a right way or that one method to teach a brother and no amount of anger or bitterness could wipe away the fact that we are after flesh and blood and perhaps one day they will learn to appreciate all that constant nagging. One day.... maybe...

Next-best-thing

As I begin my first entry into my blog, I wonder what am I suppose to write? Do I have to write something to entertain the readers? Do I have to please you dear reader or to merely pen down what comes into my mind. Maybe something that had happened to me today in life, my experiences, the good bad and the ugly....? Where do I go from here? (This is a familiar lyrics to a familiar song made popular once by NKTOB. Hey! I was young once ok?)
What a morning! Spent the whole morning prescreening some potential resumes and not so potential ones. An interesting discovery (okay, not as huge as Einstein finding the theory of relativity but something simpler and on a smaller scale) to note here is the fact that most of us will end up far from what we have ever studied in uni. Hence, comes the QUESTION, why on earth do we waste all that years studying architecture, engineering, law, economics, accounting, etc..etc... only to find ourselves doing absolutely nothing relevant to our majors?
Are we just so desperate for to land a job that we end up with "next-best-thing" position? Are we as employers just as responsible in creating all the "next-best-thing" position or have the universities failed to create suitable majors/subjects that are more suited for the job market?
I received a few resumes with engineering background who had applied for a customer service post! Imagine having spent countless hours studying vectors, calculating the diameter of a pipe or study the co-relation between aerodynamics and design just to have them end up being bounded behind desks in a customer service position. What went wrong? Was it the education system that emphasizes the need of more science-based grads but yet the job market cannot offer enough jobs relating to the major? What went wrong? Was it the employers who could not offer more science-based jobs/career? What went wrong?
One wonders...
